Dr Tshoanelo Miya holds a PhD in Ichthyology obtained from Rhodes University. Her main research interests are the molecular systematics and physiology of selected fish groups.
She collaborate with institutions such as South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, University of Illinois and University of Chile.
Molecular systematics includes the use of DNA sequence to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships as well as the phylogeography structure of different fish species and populations.
Fish physiology includes the use of fish serum, DNA and RNA to assess the adaptation strategies and behaviour of the antifreeze protein in Antarctic fishes that occupy different weather regimes in the Southern Ocean.
