Dr Shakira Shaik

Senior Lecturer

Dr Shaik is a senior lecturer in the Life Sciences and has been involved in teaching and research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2001. Her current research focus is on the establishment of natural breeding populations of orphan crops/ African leafy vegetables that are high in essential micronutrients.

  • Recipient of NRF, IDDAS & UKZN research grants
  • Lifetime member of the Golden Key International Honour Society
  • Member of the South African Association of Botanists (SAAB)
  • Member of SLS Teaching & Learning committee
  • Graduated 7 postgraduate students (MSc & PhD), currently supervising 5 PhD & 2 MSc students
