Dr Ghai’s major area of research is forensics epigenetics and is involved in development of methylation markers for identification of human body fluids found at the crime scene. In addition, DNA methylation differences between diverse South African population is also one of the focus areas.

Her interdisciplinary research includes study of DNA methylation patterns associated with chronic inflammation in type 2 diabetes and analysis of SNPs associated with gestational diabetes.
