Charles is a benthic ecologist (PhD, Rhodes University). His focus is on deep-sea benthic biodiversity, using visual sampling (ROV’s, towed- or drop-cameras) to investigate South Africa’s chronically understudied continental shelf. He has pioneered, and remains part of, long-term offshore benthic monitoring at the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (led by SAEON), and is keenly involved in teaching a new generation of offshore ecologists
