Professor Ahmed Thandar
Prof Ahmed Thandar specializes on the taxonomy and biogeography of sea cucumbers (holothuroid echinoderms) and is the only expert in this field in South Africa. Either alone or in collaboration he has erected or described 70 new taxa including: 2 families, 12 genera, 1 subgenus, 54 species and 1 subspecies.

He has written and contributed to several biogeographical papers and co-authored a text on Practical Animal Anatomy, which was once prescribed at eight institutions of higher learning in South Africa. Even after official retirement, he still continues with his research activities.
Quote:   "Make research a sport rather than a task. I have learned long ago that acquiring knowledge and building on it gives one greater satisfaction than any idle sport."
