Microscopy & Microanalysis Unit

The Microscopy and Microanalysis Unit (MMU) is a service facility at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Our services include sample preparation for microscopy, image capturing, X-ray microanalysis and image analysis. We offer a high level of service to both the University community and commercial clients. We also host basic and advanced light and electron microscopy courses, and conduct tours and instrument demonstrations for school groups. The MMU has departments at the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses.

We have an impressive complement of techniques and instruments, which include: Sample preparation techniques – Resin embedding, Ultramicrotomy, Sputter coating, Carbon coating and Freeze-drying.
